Brazil must not repeat 1950 “tragedy”

Brazil cannot repeat the tragedy of losing the World Cup on home soil again in 2014, their sports minister has said.

Aldo Rebelo is only too aware of the disaster of 1950, when Brazil lost at home to Uruguay in the final match of the last World Cup they hosted, thus losing a title they had expected to win.

“We cannot repeat the national tragedy of 1950 when we lost to Uruguay,” Rebelo told journalists.

“It was like losing to your younger brother. Losing to Argentina, well that would be like losing to your brother-in-law and that is something that you also can never accept in the family.”
