Colombia and Chile close in on World Cup spots

Colombia beat Peru 2-0 on Tuesday to cement their hold on second place in South America’s World Cup qualifiers.

They narrow the gap on leaders Argentina, who were held 0-0 by Ecuador away. Chile strengthened their grip on a top four spot which would qualify them automatically with a 3-1 win over Bolivia.

Venezuela, who were fifth, fell a position after being beaten by Uruguay, who leapt above them.
