Ontheminute.com: Weekend round up; Corinthians clinch World title with La Liga title race all but over

Weekend round up; Corinthians clinch World title with La Liga title race all but over

Published: 17.12.12 / Written by: David Gold

The big game of the weekend saw Corinthians beat Chelsea 1-0 in Yokohama to lift the Club World Cup title for the second time.

That result means the Brazilians are the first team from South America to win the competition since 2006.

Back in Europe, and Barcelona have more than a hand on the La Liga title after beating Atletico Madrid 4-1, combined with Real Madridís 2-2 draw with Espanyol. Atletico remain second. Elsewhere Malaga beat Sevilla 2-0, while Levante beat Real Zaragoza 1-0. Athletic Bilbao beat Real Mallorca 1-0, and Valencia lost again, 1-0 at home to Rayo Vallecano.

Juventus are another side who look to have their hands on a trophy too after they beat Atalanta 3-0. They are well clear now of Inter Milan, seven points behind in second, who lost 1-0 at Lazio. Napoli lost 3-2 at home to Bologna to dent their title hopes. Fiorentina beat Siena 4-1, Roma lost 1-0 at Chievo and AC Milan beat Pescara 4-1.

Manchester United remain clear in the Premier League after beating Sunderland 3-1. Manchester Cityís 3-1 win at Newcastle means they keep ground with the leaders, who are six points ahead of them. Behind, Chelsea were absent this weekend, meaning Tottenham drew level with them after beating Swansea 1-0. West Brom drew 0-0 with West Ham, while Everton drew 1-1 with Stoke and Liverpool were stunned 3-1 at home by Aston Villa.

In Germany, Bayern Munich are also well clear at the top but were held 1-1 by Borussia Moenchengladbach this weekend. That gives a glimmer of hope to second place Bayer Leverkusen, who beat Hamburg 3-0, and champions Borussia Dortmund, who won 3-1 at Hoffenheim. Dortmund are still 12 points behind though. Schalke were beaten by Freiburg 3-1, meaning Huub Stevens leaves the Ruhr outfit.

One league far from over is Ligue 1, where Paris St Germain went top after beating previous leaders Lyon 1-0. Marseille are keeping pace after they won 1-0 at Toulouse. Lorient are fourth after shocking St Etienne 2-0, Nice are surprisingly up to fifth after a 3-2 win over Evian, Rennes beat Valenciennes 2-0, champions Montpellier beat Bastia 4-0 and Lille drew with Reims 1-1.

Olympiakos beat Panionos 2-1 in Greece to remain well clear of their rivals, with Athens neighbours Panathinaikos still struggling after losing 3-0 to Veria. Leaders PSV drew 1-1 with NEC in Holland, with Twente in second after beating Heracles 3-2. Ajax are second after a 4-2 win at Willem II. In an incredibly tight title race fourth placed Vitesse drew 2-2 with Waalwijk, whilst Feyenoord are in fifth after beating Ado den Haag 3-2. In Portugal Benfica went top with Porto not in action, as they won 4-1 against Maritimo. Braga beat Estoril Praha 3-0.

In South America, Millonarios won the Colombian title, their first triumph in 14 years after beating Medellin 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the second leg of the Clausura final. Another final going to a nailbiting conclusion was in Paraguay, where the Clausura was won by Libertad, who lifted their 16th title after winning 2-0 at home to Sportivo Luqueno, to finish ahead of Nacional.
