Ontheminute.com: Who is the best player in the Premier League?

Who is the best player in the Premier League?

Published: 11.03.13 / Written by: David Gold

The debate about the best player in the Premier League has intensified in recent weeks, with Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez in particularly lethal form.

Bale has struck eight goals in six games, practically winning matches on his own for Tottenham. No player in Europe, aside from the incredible Leo Messi, has scored as many goals from outside the area this season as Bale. It is that kind of form which has him pegged as the ideal replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid. High praise indeed. Bale is indeed in a high class of player. His ability to make the extraordinary routine is something that only the very best can do, and he is showing just how good he is at the moment for Tottenham.

The other stand out star of the season has to be Luis Suarez, who at times looks like he carries Liverpool in a similar way. The Uruguayan is incredible with the ball at his feet, able to feint one way or the other, his dribbling is immense, and he is a fine passer of the ball as well. A great finisher, it is surprising though how many chances Suarez wastes, but he is too capable of striking from anywhere at any time.

Then there are the other great players in this league. Robin van Persie has continued where he left off last year for Arsenal with Manchester United, scoring regularly and in impressive fashion. He is ruthless and able to kill off teams with his ability to strike at vital moments. The Dutchman has of course been key for United so far this season.

Michu has also been prolific in his debut season in the Premier League. The Spaniard’s ability to drift into space and finish chances well has been a feature of Swansea’s remarkable season so far, and in a year when the Welsh side have won their first trophy he has a claim to be the league’s leading light.

Other Spaniards have shone too. At Chelsea, Juan Mata has outshone countryman Fernando Torres spectacularly. Mata has at times helped keep Chelsea going, almost single handedly, winning games with his brilliant passing and lethal finishing. His ability to score from nothing also makes Mata a great threat and one of the stars of the season. Few playmakers have such a decisive influence in the league. One who is almost as influential is Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla. Since signing from Malaga the diminutive midfielder has been fantastic going forward, scoring 11 goals and creating many more. His passing and intelligence is typical of the type of team Arsene Wenger likes to build at Arsenal and he has lit up the league.

Other stars worth noting include Marouane Fellaini, who was in fine form in the first half of the season, although he has tailed off since, but he is a physical force of nature and fine goalscorer. Team mate Leighton Baines is also a great player, one of the most prolific creator of chances, and his dead ball ability makes him a constant danger.

These are the stars of this Premier League, the best players there. Bale is clearly in a class of his own at this very moment in time, but because of his array of skills, the fact that he does not rely on one or two skills predominantly, but is a complete and all round threat, mean that Suarez must surely be considered as the best player in the Premier League.
