The Guardian revealed that extensive negotiations had taken place, with it looking likely that the Italian would take over at the Principality club towards the end of the season when Manchester City’s title challenge looked to have failed.
When City won the title he was awarded a new five year contract at the Etihad, while Monaco hired Claudio Ranieri instead.
