Putin delighted at World Cup vote
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has spoken of his delight at winning the right to host the World Cup in Russia for the first time.
The Russians won the vote surprisingly easily in the end, winning an overall majority of 13 votes in the second round despite Mr Putin not arriving to court delegates.
Putin said on Russian TV that "Russia loves football, Russia knows what football is and in our country we have everything to conduct the 2018 World Cup on a very worthy level. The decision corresponds with FIFA’s philosophy for developing football, especially in those regions of the world where that development is needed."
