Rooney has been dogged by problems over the years with his behaviour both on and off the pitch often in disrepute, but Ferguson believes tonight will get the best out of his temperamental forward.

"We have players who will all like this stage.

"In terms of Rooney's progress in Europe, he is much more mature than he was in 2009. And others too."
