Cannavaro snubbed by Italy because of name

Paolo Cannavaro would have been called up by Italy for their World Cup qualifiers were it not for his surname, his agent has claimed.

Paolo, who plays for Napoli, is the brother of Fabio, the World Cup winning captain from 2006.

“Unfortunately, those in the best shape are not always called up for international duty,” said agent Gaetano Fedele.

“It is right to open the door to youth, but at times a little experience is useful too. Cannavaro has found his ‘Azzurri’ in the Napoli side, but naturally there are some regrets.

“I am convinced that with a different surname he would certainly have been called up. At the end of the day I remain hopeful, but it seems difficult to see him as part of the Nazionale in future.”
