Sunderland close in on former Man Utd and Liverpool striker

Sunderland have reportedly made initial contact former Manchester United and Liverpool striker with Michael Owen.

Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill is keen to sign Owen to boost his forward options.

But the Black Cats face a battle as Stoke City remain Owen's most likely destination.

Owen has been without a club since being released by Manchester United at the end of last season.

Owen is a free agent and can still join a club after the transfer window has shut.
