Valverde quits after Valencia defeat

Ernesto Valverde has left his post as coach of Valencia after they failed to qualify for the Champions League.

A 4-3 defeat at Sevilla proved the final straw as Real Sociedad finished fourth with a 1-0 win at Deportivo la Coruna, whilst Valverde is also unhappy with boardroom unrest at the Mestalla.

“This has been my last game,” Valverde said afterwards. “I am not very pleased, not just with the game and failing to get into the Champions League, but with the general situation at the club.

“There is instability with the resignations in the last couple of months. Without those I would have stayed. So I have made the decision I think had to be taken.”
