Weekend round up; Real suffer shock defeat, United stretch lead and PSG move clear

Barcelona are sixteen points clear of their rivals after they could only draw 1-1 at Valencia on Sunday night. Atletico Madrid beat Real Betis 1-0 to move nine points behind the leaders and seven clear of their city rivals Real. Malaga drew 1-1 with Real Zaragoza, Rayo Vallecano lost 2-1 at Sevilla, Real Sociedad beat Real Mallorca 3-0 and Levante were beaten 3-2 at Espanyol.

Manchester United took more control of the Premier League title race this weekend after they beat Fulham 1-0 away from home. They are now nine points clear of champions Manchester City, who drew 2-2 at home to Liverpool. Chelsea in third also lost, 3-2 at Newcastle, and are nervously looking over their shoulder after Tottenham beat West Brom 1-0 and Arsenal won by the same score against Stoke City. Everton are also in the mix in spite of their 3-3 draw with Aston Villa.

Paris St Germain took control of the French title race for the first time this season after they crushed Toulouse 4-0, a result which means they have gone eight games without conceding, a club record. They are three points clear of Lyon, who lost 3-1 at Ajaccio on Sunday, as well as six clear of Marseille, who lost 1-0 at home to Nancy. Bordeaux moved into fourth after winning 2-0 against Valenciennes, whilst Nice continue to ride high after winning 2-0 against Brest. Saint Etienne beat Sochaux 2-1 and Rennes were held 2-2 by Lorient. Champions Montpellier won 3-1 against Reims.

Juventus won 2-1 against Chievo this weekend to remain three points clear in Serie A. The defence of their title is coming under increased pressure though, with Napoli’s 2-0 win over Catania temporarily moving them top of the table. Lazio are six points adrift of Napoli now after a 3-2 loss at Genoa. AC Milan are up to fourth after Mario Balotelli scored twice on his debut in their 2-1 win over Udinese. They are ahead of city rivals Inter, who were stunned 3-1 at Siena. Fiorentina won 2-0 against Parma, whilst Roma’s 4-2 home defeat to Cagliari left them eighth and without a manager after they fired Zdenek Zeman.

Bayern Munich continued to dominate the Bundesliga this weekend with an easy 3-0 win at Mainz. Borussia Dortmund, the champions, are now second after beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 to move ahead of them. Eintracht Frankfurt won 2-0 at Hamburg to stay fourth, and another damaging defeat leaves Schalke sixth after they lost 2-1 at home to struggling Greuther Furth. Borussia Moenchengladbach lost 2-1 at Nurnberg.

PSV Eindhoven cemented top spot in the Netherlands as they slaughtered ADO Den Haag 7-0. Ajax, the champions, are up to second after a 3-0 win at Venlo. Twente were beaten 4-2 at home by Utrecht. Porto and Benfica remain tied in Portugal after both won. Porto crushed Vitoria Guimaraes 4-0, whilst Benfica were 3-0 winners against Vitoria Setubal.

In Turkey Galatasaray were held 1-1 at Bursaspor, but remain clear at the top of the table. Besiktas were held 2-2 by Karabukspor, Antalyaspor beat Buyuksehir 1-0 and Fenerbahce were stunned 2-1 at home by Sivasspor.
