He said: “I’ve spoken to Eric and I think he would be happy to return here which was pleasing but it’s down to Martin and how he sees Eric’s future at Aston Villa.
“Martin knows my ideas and my thoughts as well. We would look to retain Eric over the summer and give him a summer programme. We’re just hopeful on that one.
“I would like to see Eric in pre-season with us. That would be a bonus.”
