The Brazilian suffered the thigh injury during the Selecao’s World Cup 2010 qualifier against Ecuador.
It was expected that Maicon would be out for a month but Inter doctor Franco Combi has revealed the defender may miss the rest of the season.
“Brazil national doctor Jose Luis Runco has told me that Maicon has a big lesion in the top of his right leg,” Combi told Inter’s website.
“I spoke to the Brazilian doctors last night and Runco has agreed to look after Maicon for around 10 days until he returns to Italy.
“When he returns to Milan, we will conduct new tests to ascertain the extent of the damage and try to re-educate the leg.”
