Football Federation Australia chief executive Ben Buckley has confirmed the job as attracted huge interest from applicants around the world.
Current Australia coach Pim Verbeek will step down from the job after the World Cup in June.
“A lot of applicants who have applied could potentially meet what we’re after and there’s plenty of very good coaches who want the job,” Buckley said.
“But it’s a matter of the right person being available and fitting our criteria. We’re well into the process, we have a committee that meets regularly and has identified a number of prospective candidates.”
Frank Rijkaard, Leo Beenhakker, Johan Neeskens, Marco van Basten, Martin Jol, Philippe Troussier and Nevio Scala are all being linked with the position.
