Merimovich led Israel to the Asian Cup success in 1960 and enjoyed a glittering playing career.
But after the win, Israel were forced to join the European Federation when their Arab neighbours, who refuse to recognise Israel’s right to exist, declared war on them in 1967 and subsequently refused to play them in international football competition.
