The 25-year-old impressed for St Mirren last season, but has just one year left on his contract with the club.
“I’ve mentioned to Darren in passing on one or two occasions about extending his deal, but we’ve not got down to the nitty gritty,” Lennon explained.
“We’ve very keen to extend his deal, but we need to sit round the table.
“It’s up to us and Darren to improve weaknesses in his game, but I feel with the type of character he is and the mentality he’s got, he will continue to do well.
“He has a winning mentality and that’s what we need at this club.”
