Mourinho has long been linked with a return to English football.
Stuart Pearce was in charge of England in the 3-2 defeat to Holland on Wednesday night.
“England need to get someone in quickly,” Ashton told TalkSport.
“When you look at the squad and what happened last night it shows that England need someone to take hold [of the squad] and bring in their own ideas.
“It would be better for the players to have someone new in. Harry Redknapp would be the obvious choice but, if I could pick anyone at all, it would be Jose Mourinho.”
