The new deal will keep the 22-year-old at Schalke until the summer of 2015.
Unnerstall’s previous deal was set to expire next summer.
Schalke are also working on contract extensions for the likes of Atsuto Uchida, Lewis Holtby and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
