But Villas-Boas insists that his side have not already made a bid for the 25-year-old centre-back.
Reports earlier today suggested that Bolton had already accepted a £7million bid from Chelsea for the England defender.
Villas-Boas said: “We are aware of Gary’s contractual situation.
“He’s an interesting player for the club.”
Villas-Boas admits that his side are short of cover at the back after Alex handed in a transfer request earlier this season.
Villas-Boas added: “You know that we have taken a decision this season regarding the central defenders, regarding Alex.
“We haven’t decided yet what we are going to do with the Alex situation.
“We have to make the wisest decision, be it Alex, be it Cahill.”
