The defeat leaves Ecuador in third place and at risk of being drawn into the battle with Chile, Venezuela and Uruguay below them.
Chile did their hopes no harm as they beat Paraguay to move into fourth, whilst Venezuela’s 1-1 draw at Bolivia leaves them fifth. Uruguay, who reached the semi finals of the last World Cup, are seventh.
