England boss Capello: I’ll win you the World Cup

He said: “My life could have been easy but I need a challenge — and From Back Page the biggest challenge in football is to lift England to the stars.

“I will win the World Cup. If I didn’t think that, I would not have taken the job. I would have continued playing golf.

“I will do everything I can to make the England team successful.”

Capello added: “I am very proud and honoured to be the England manager.

“It is one of the biggest jobs in world football.

“Chief executive Brian Barwick and the FA have given me a great opportunity. I am very excited about the challenge and I’m already planning for the first game in February against Switzerland.

“Every player has a new start with me — they all have the chance to impress.

“Playing for your country is the biggest honour for a football player. I know because I had that honour myself.

“I expect my players to give 100 per cent and be professional at all times.

“I will start my work immediately and I will move to England at the beginning of January.

“My English is not yet at the level that I would like and I am starting lessons straight away.

“While I have brought some Italian coaches to work with me in England, I will also be working with Sir Trevor Brooking to discuss English coaches. It is very important to me that we have English coaches working with the team.

“This is a job which arrives when the end of my career is not so far away and that gives me an extra incentive. I fervently want to end my career in style and with success.

“I’m determined to do so.

“The England manager’s job will be the last of my career.

“It would be great to finish at the top after so many years in football. However, I’m expecting some very tough work.

“I will have to study a lot more than if I was in charge of a club side.

“I know there are a lot of expectations but I think that I and my team will reach great objectives.”
