Esson is ready to show manager Terry Butcher that he has plenty left to give at the club.
He said: “You have to show a bit of desire. I’m sure the boys will sit down to watch a video of the game and see it on reflection. We’ll take a look in the mirror. I’ll do that myself.
“I’m one of the more experienced players so I’ve no problem accepting responsibility. I’ve enjoyed my time here and I’d like to start speaking to the club about a new contract.
“I’m sure the manager knows who he wants to keep. I’ve done well this season but I strive to do better. I’m 32 this month but feel as though there’s a lot of life in me yet.”
