Hearts had been favourites to sign the 33 year old however the Edinburgh club pulled out earlier this week.
“I’m not certain what’s going on with Paul Hartley coming to join us,” McGhee told the Daily Record.
“Reports on television say Hearts have dropped their interest in signing him.
“I don’t know if that’s the last word on the situation or not.”
