Rangers boss turns to youth

Kevin Thomson, Kris Boyd, Nacho Novo, DaMarcus Beasley and Stevie Smith has left Rangers already this summer.

“They’ve got an opportunity this year to do that,” Smith told Sky Sports News.

“We will look to add two or three players to the group that we have at the present moment but even allowing for that it will mean that the younger ones will get an opportunity to show that they can do this season.

“We haven’t got anything so far. We’ve been through a pre-season without World Cup players (Madjid) Bougherra and (Maurice) Edu.

“They’ll join us when we go to Australia on Tuesday and that boosts our squad a little bit.

“We still need to add two or three but hopefully we’ll do that. We’re looking to add to the back, middle and front, one player for each of those areas just to compensate for the players we lost in the close season.

“We have a little bit of money to spend.”
