Makela has signed a 15-month contract with the Australian side and could make his debut against Newcastle Jets on January 3.
“He’s a very important part of our plans to rebuild,” Sydney vice-chairman Scott Barlow said.
“Juho is the first of four or five signings we will be making. Some, however, may not be on board in time for the start of the Asian Champions League.”
