Weekend round up; Barca and PSG clinch titles, Sir Alex says goodbye to Old Trafford faithful

Valencia strengthened their Champions League hopes by briefly going above Sociedad with a 4-0 win at Rayo Vallecano. Malaga and Sevilla drew 0-0, a good result for their Andalucian rivals Real Betis, who won 1-0 against Celta Vigo. Real Mallorca are on the brink of the drop after losing 2-1 at Athletic Bilbao. Deportivo la Coruna likewise are in real danger after losing 1-0 to Real Valladolid.

In France Paris St Germain finally secured their first title since 1994 as they won 1-0 away to Lyon on Sunday night. Marseille beat Toulouse 2-1 to secure Champions League qualification, whilst Lille’s 3-0 win over Reims put them fourth, three points behind Lyon, and in with a real chance of qualifying for Europe’s main competition. Nice were crushed 4-0 at Evian to damage their hopes of the Champions League, whilst the other main contender St Etienne lost 3-1 at Lorient. Brest are relegated after losing 2-0 to Sochaux, Troyes helped their hopes of staying up by winning 1-0 at Ajaccio and Nancy occupy the third relegation spot after losing 3-2 to Bordeaux.

Sir Alex Ferguson got a fitting and emotional send off at Old Trafford on Sunday as Manchester United beat Swansea City 2-1 with a late goal. Manchester City lost the FA Cup final to Wigan, and Chelsea secured their Champions League spot for next season with a 2-1 win at Aston Villa. Tottenham beat Stoke 2-1 to go above Arsenal into fourth with one week remaining. Arsenal have a game in hand. Everton beat West Ham 2-0 in David Moyes’ last home game after 11 years in charge. Wigan will be relegated if they lose to Arsenal tomorrow.

In Portugal the big game between Porto and Benfica was won by the home team in a dramatic finale, Kelvin netting the winner in injury time. Both teams were unbeaten this season coming into the game, but Porto’s win meant they went above the Lisbon giants and are set to win the league again.

Bayern Munich finally got their hands on the Bundesliga trophy they won weeks ago as they beat Augsburg 3-0. Borussia Dortmund, their opponents in the Champions League final, drew 3-3 at Wolfsburg. Bayer Leverkusen won 3-1 against Hannover, but the battle for fourth place heated up after Schalke’s 2-1 defeat by Stuttgart at home. They are still fourth but only just ahead of a clutch of teams led by Freiburg, who won 2-1 at Greuther Furth, Eintracht Frankfurt who drew 1-1 at Werder Bremen, Hamburg who beat relegation haunted Hoffenheim 4-1 and Borussia Moenchengladbach, 4-2 winners at Mainz.

In Italy champions Juventus were held 1-1 by Cagliari this weekend, and Napoli beat Siena 2-1, a result that secured the home team Champions League football but relegated the visitors. Milan and Roma drew 0-0, so Fiorentina still have hope of a top three finish, after beating Palermo 1-0, a result that relegates the Sicilians. Udinese are fifth after beating Atalanta 2-1 ,Inter Milan drew 0-0 against Genoa, Lazio beat Sampdoria 2-0 and Parma lost 2-0 to Bologna.

In Russia CSKA Moscow crushed Lokomotiv 4-1 in the Moscow derby to secure their hold on top spot in the league, ahead of Zenit St Petersburg, who drew 1-1 at Rostov. Anzhi Makhachkala lost 1-0 at Terek Grozny.

Newell’s Old Boys beat Godoy Cruz 3-1 in Argentina to remain top of the Clausura championship. Lanus remain in second after drawing 0-0 with Independiente. River Plate beat All Boys 2-0 to close the gap, and Quilmes beat Colon Santa Fe 3-0.

Carlos Quintero was the hero this weekend for Santos Laguna, striking twice as Santos Laguna beat Atlas 3-1 to move into the semi finals of the Mexican Clausura. They will face Cruz Azul, who lost 1-0 at Morelia but won on aggregate. Monterrey also progressed to the last four after a 1-1 draw with Tigre and 2-1 win overall, and America edged out Pumas 2-1.

In the US New York Red Bulls drew 1-1 at New England Revolution but remain top of the Eastern Conference ahead of Houston Dynamo, beaten 1-0 by Sporting Kansas at home. In the Western Conference Dallas are top after beating DC United 2-1, and Portland Timber’s 3-0 win over Chivas USA keeps them second.

In the first leg of the Brazilian state championships, Atletico Madrid took a commanding 3-0 lead over Cruizeiro in the Minas Gerais championship. In Bahia Dinei scored four times for Vitoria in a 7-3 win over Bahia. Corinthians beat Santos 2-1 in the Paulista championship.
