Wigan boss ready to spend in January

The Spaniard is keen to bring in ‘two or three’ new players in January.

“We lost one player (King) we didn’t expect to lose and we sent out a player on loan as well (Ben Watson to QPR),” he said.

“We’re a little light in numbers and we need to bring in two or three players in the transfer window to give us the right balance to go into the second half of the campaign with full confidence.

“But we must have players with the right character, who are at the right moment in their careers, who can bring something different to what we already have.

“Importantly, with my focus on the players we have in the squad, the players coming in have to help them.

“So we need to work hard to bring in these kind of players, but not just bring in numbers for the sake of it.

“I will never sign a player because it’s the window and it’s open, that’s not the way I work.”

“We’ve got a few options and we’ll look to see if they are right ones,” he added.

“As soon as you finish one transfer you are working towards the next one, so you need to be creative and plan in that way, and that’s what we are going to do here.

“As for money, it will depend a little on how the next six games go.

“Given our situation here we don’t have to sell anyone to balance the books or are forced to sell, and that’s probably our biggest strength.

“We lost a couple of players who are now off the wage bill, so we have a little bit of room to manoeuvre there. We will work as hard as we can.”
