McCarthy wants the 23-year-old to push veteran Marcus Hahnemann for a place in the first team.
McCarthy said: “Wayne has been terrific for us since he lost his spot last season – he knuckled down and worked hard and continues to train really well and provide Marcus with great support.
“He signed a new long-term contract in the summer because we’ve got every faith and belief in him and because he is a very talented goalkeeper. And I know he is ready and waiting to be called upon if needed.”
