Chelsea managed to beat Bolton 4-0, following goals by Salomon Kalou, Florent Malouda, Deco and Didier Drogba.
“That’s as bad as a performance as you’ll see,” Megson told Sky Sports News.
“If you don’t compete against Chelsea and some of the other big clubs in this Premier League you’re going to have huge problems.
“I know this was a Carling Cup tie, but we didn’t make it a cup tie. We needed to make it about tempo and strength and we made it about passing and technique.”
“There were one or two that did okay, but nowhere near as well as they can do,” he continued.
“When you’re in a cup tie it’s purely, simply about getting through to the next round so therefore you can’t really say there were positives.”
