Megson has had Smith watched several times this season and is ready to make a £2million bid in January, according to News of the World.
The 28-year-old has impressed for Newcastle at the centre of midfield this season.
Megson is keen to bring in Smith as a replacement for summer signing Sean Davis, who will be out of action for the season with a knee injury.
