The ban would have prevented four South American countries – Columbia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru – from staging home matches in some of their preferred venues and prompted a united protest from Conmebol, the South American Federation.
Fifa have now raised the altitude limit to 3,000 metres and, after a personal intervention by Bolivian President Evo Morales, have even agreed to make an exception for Bolivian capital La Paz which sits at 3,600 metres.
