Portsmouth skipper Campbell ready to help England

The 32-year-old has been out of the England setup since McClaren took charge last summer.

England will face Israel and Russia for crucial Euro 2008 qualifiers next month.

Campbell told The Sun: “There has been no contact from Steve McClaren.

“I have only read what has been in the papers but if the call came I would be delighted.

“I am not going to turn my back on the chance to play for England again. If it is one game or 15 games it does not matter.”

He said of his axing: “If it didn’t hurt then, bloody hell, I’m not human and I don’t want to play football. But I never believed I would not play for England again.

“I’m a true believer. I’ve played a lot of games for my country, important games, and it’s one of the best things you can do in your career.

“If the chance is there I’ll take it, I have had some great times playing for my country. I understand the situation because of injuries to certain players.”
