US, Mexico winners in early Gold Cup action

A pinpoint strike from midfielder Clint Dempsey gave the US squad an early lead in their group B match against Guatemala on Thursday. While the US forwards’ subsequent efforts to find the back of the net proved futile, the team’s defense managed to weather the Guatemalan side’s second-half assault to secure a 1-0 victory.

The US’ next scheduled match is against Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday.

On Friday, Mexico managed to put down a determined Cuban effort, shrugging off a goal by Cuba’s Reynier Alcantara to rally and win 2-1 on a pair of goals by Jared Borguetti and Nery Alberto Castillo. The game saw veterans such as striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco and World Cup goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez stay on the bench.

Mexico’s next game will be against Honduras on Sunday.
