Wilkins admits Chelsea need to buy in January

Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Salomon Kalou and John Obi Mikel are all expected to be away for four Premier League games, two rounds of the FA Cup and both legs of the Carling Cup semi-final due to the African Cup of Nations.

Wilkins said: “We are naturally concerned about the quality of the players we will be losing to the African Nations Cup in January.

“Any team in the country would miss four players of the calibre of Drogba, Essien, Kalou and Mikel.

“It would be very pleasant to be allowed to bring people in during January – and there are certainly a few names out there that Carlo would like to sign.

“We are going to lose some massively important footballers but until our appeal against the transfer ban is resolved we’ve no idea what the situation will be in January.

“We knew the African Nations Cup was coming and I’m sure Mr Abramovich has looked and thought ‘We need a few more’.

“Although we are currently banned from making any signings, we are still looking and monitoring certain players.

“We’re the same as any other team. We are always looking to strengthen our squad. If we are able to sign players in the New Year, all well and good.

“If the ban is not lifted, we’ll just have to deal with it and crack on with what we already have.”

Chelsea have appealed their transfer ban handed to them by FIFA to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

He said: “If we have to buy players to win the Premier League, we will do that. We want to win the Premier League this season. People say you don’t get value in January.

“But we signed Nicolas Anelka last year and he’s been the best buy for the last couple of seasons.

“We got ourselves a world-class footballer who was eligible to play in every competition and hopefully there are a couple of guys out there now in a similar situation.

“I don’t believe that it would be a hard sell convincing players to sign for us and fill in while other players are away.

“In football you make decisions on what benefits you as a player.

“People know the situation here. You either come here, work hard and play or you don’t sign.”
