News of the World says Alonso’s agent Inaki Ibanez has met Rafa Benitez to inform the manager that the 27-year-old wish to leave.
Real Madrid, Manchester City, Arsenal and Juventus have all been linked with Alonso int he last 12 months.
A friend of Alonso told News of the World: “Xabi loves Liverpool but he doesn’t feel he can stay. He has not been happy for a long time and wants to go somewhere he feels he can enjoy his football again.”
Alonso joined the Reds from Real Sociedad in a £10million deal in 2004.
