Hugo Rodallega and Jordi Gomez scored the goals for the Latics.
Martinez told Sky Sports: “It is a huge victory.
“First of all, we spoke before the game about how it would be important for whoever managed to win the three points.
“What is pleasing is that we learnt from when we played with 10 men against Sunderland.
“I am just so proud of the players. In the second half they got together and it was a pleasure to see how we played as a team.”
Wolves ace Karl Henry was sent off after just 11 minutes following a challenge on Jordi Gomez.
Martinez admits he feared that Gomez had broken his leg.
He said: “Jordi is very fortunate that he escaped damage. Straight away I thought it was a broken leg.
“The excessive force and how reckless (the challenge) was. It was a real worry.
“But after that, I didn’t want the sending-off as it puts pressure on you to win and you become anxious.”
