Henderson has impressed for both Sunderland and the England Under-21 side this season.
Black told talkSPORT: “Certainly in the last 18 months he has progressed enormously and that is credit to himself and how hard he works in training and how he approaches games.
“He did magnificently well on Friday for the Under-21s [against Romania]. I know Mr Capello was there and I am sure he has had a good look at him.
“Whether he will progress quickly to the England senior team, who knows, but he is certainly doing well at the moment.
“I don’t know the situation with England, but he has shown this year he is capable of playing in the Premier League and he is one of our best performers most weeks.
“He is really regular now in his performances, he is a fabulous athlete and plays off both feet and if he does get the call I am sure he will do all right.”
