The 31-year-old has joined Aberdeen on a free transfer as his contract at Greek side Panserraikos expired at the end of last season.
Mawene knows Aberdeen boss Craig Brown from their time together at Preston.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Craig at Preston, he is a fantastic coach and really sold Aberdeen as a club and a city to me,” Mawene said.
