Alonso is still struggling with a severe bruising that he suffered in the 3-0 defeat og Newcastle on Sunday.
“Xabi is not fit and cannot play,” Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez said. “We think maybe in the next week he will be okay. We had an idea that he could be fit for this game but in the end it was impossible.”
Fernando Torres and Javier Mascherano, who have both been out with injuries, will be fit for the game.
The Reds boss added: “Javier was training and is in the squad, and so is Fernando.”
