Essien will miss most of the season due to the injury.
He told The Sun: “I am devastated but these things happen in football.
“There was no challenge. But after I cut out a cross and landed I felt awkward and the pain was sharp.
“I am very disappointed to miss the start of a very important season for Chelsea and Ghana’s World Cup qualifiers.
“I hope to make a full and quick recovery.”
