Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is keen for the midfielder to sign a new deal.
Mascherano has been linked with a move to Barcelona and the Reds have previously rejected a £30million swoop from the Spanish giants.
Reports suggested Liverpool officials believed Mascherano were looking for a new and improved deal.
Mascherano said: “This is not true.
“I have never asked for a new contract. I already have a contract with Liverpool. I don’t play for the money.
“I play for me and to win things. Money is not important to me.
“Obviously I will not play for free but why should I?”
