The People reports that Stoke boss Tony Pulis is keen on signing Cole and chairman Peter Coates is ready to back him in the transfer market.
Cole has impressed in pre-season, but has been struggling with a knee problem in recent months.
Stoke are also reportedly interested in signing Tottenham midfielder David Bentley.
