The 19-year-old is available on a free transfer after quitting Ipswich Town last month.
Lavery has traveled to Sunderland to train with the club. The Canadian-born striker is staying with his former Ipswich team-mate Connor Wickham.
Tottenham are also reportedly interested in the talented striker.
