Edman is likely to sign two-and-a-half-year contract with the Latics.
Wigan boss Steve Bruce is also waiting for Honduras defender Maynor Figueroa to get his work permit.
Bruce said: “We have got Maynor until the end of the season. He has done very well on a short trial.”
