The Norweigan striker has impressed for Villa this season but has just 15 months left on his current contract.
O’Neill said: “John is coming into good form at the moment and seems to be clear of the little niggling injuries which have affected him this year.
“I hope he can stay fit between now and the end of the season as we will need him – like we will need everybody.
“But in terms of contracts I won’t be doing anything now – and nor are the players expecting anything – until the end of the season.
“I was asked about James Milner and that’s the first time I’ve been made to think about contracts.
“We’ll just go on with our aims of trying to challenge for a top four place and we are in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.”
