Fraizer Campbell opened the scoring for the Black Cats in the 22nd minute, but Norwegian striker John Carew managed to rescue a point for the hosts.
“It’s a fantastic result,” the Sunderland boss told Sky Sports.
“To come here against a very good Aston Villa team who have got their tails up – they’re in the semi-final, they’ve been to a final, and they’re competing for fourth – (and get a draw) is very pleasing.”
