O’Neill said: “Gardner has been as unlucky as anyone this season.
“He’s had injuries and he was just about to force his way back in and then he got injured against Chelsea. But he’s bided his time and he’s a strong boy with a great attitude.
“He played wide on Saturday but he was heavily involved and I love his attitude.”
