The Mirror reports that McLeish is keen to bring in Guthrie to replace crocked Jermaine Jenas.
Jenas, who is on-loan from Tottenham, will be out of action for the rest of the season.
Guthrie’s current contract with Newcastle expires next summer and the midfielder could join Villa in a cut-price deal.
