The Mirror reports that Villa goalkeeping coach Terry Gennoe watched Gilks in action at the weekend.
McLeish is keen to bring in Gilks as a replacement for current back-up Brad Guzan.
Guzan is expected to leave Villa when his current contract with the club expires at the end of the season.
