Aston Villa have opened discussions with Leon Goretzka as they attempt to add an experienced midfielder before the transfer deadline.
The Germany international is available without a fee after ending his long spell with Bayern Munich.
Sky Sports News reports that Villa have now made contact over a potential agreement. Strengthening the defensive midfield position remains a priority, with the club exploring the free-agent market for a proven option.
Goretzka has been unattached since his Bayern contract expired on June 30. The 31-year-old would bring extensive Bundesliga, Champions League and international experience to Villa Park if terms can be finalised.
Villa had also considered Joao Palhinha as part of their search. However, the Portugal international is set to join Benfica, forcing the Midlands club to move towards alternative targets.
A deal for Goretzka could offer significant value without requiring a transfer fee. Talks remain at an early stage, but Villa now have an opportunity to make a major late-window statement.
